Pattern-Database Heuristics for Partially Observable Nondeterministic Planning

چکیده
Heuristic search is the dominant approach to classical planning. However, many realistic problems violate classical assumptions such as determinism of action outcomes or full observability. In this paper, we investigate how – and how successfully – a particular classical technique, namely informed search using an abstraction heuristic, can be transferred to nondeterministic planning under partial observability. Specifically, we explore pattern-database heuristics with automatically generated patterns in the context of informed progression search for strong cyclic planning under partial observability. To that end, we discuss projections and how belief states can be heuristically assessed either directly or by going back to the contained world states, and empirically evaluate the resulting heuristics internally and compared to a delete-relaxation and a blind approach. From our experiments we can conclude that in terms of coverage and guidance, it is preferable to represent both nondeterminism and partial observability in the abstraction (instead of relaxing them), and that the resulting abstraction heuristics significantly outperform both blind search and a delete-relaxation approach where nondeterminism and partial observability are also relaxed.

Pattern Database Heuristics for Fully Observable Nondeterministic Planning
When planning in an uncertain environment, one is often interested in finding a contingent plan that prescribes appropriate actions for all possible states that may be encountered during the execution of the plan. We consider the problem of finding strong cyclic plans for fully observable nondeterministic (FOND) planning problems. The algorithm we choose is LAO*, an informed explicit state sear...
متن کاملPOND: The Partially-Observable and Non-Deterministic Planner
This paper describes POND, a planner developed to solve problems characterized by partial observability and nondeterminism. POND searches in the space of belief states, guided by a relaxed plan heuristic. Many of the more interesting theoretical issues showcased by POND show up within its relaxed plan heuristics. Namely, the exciting topics are defining distance estimates between belief states,...
متن کاملInterleaving Execution and Planning for Nondeterministic, Partially Observable Domains
Methods that interleave planning and execution are a practical solution to deal with complex planning problems in nondeterministic domains under partial observability. However, most of the existing approaches do not tackle in a principled way the important issue of termination of the planning-execution loop, or only do so considering specific assumptions over the domains. In this paper, we tack...
متن کاملA Model Approximation Scheme for Planning in PartiallyObservable Stochastic
Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) are a natural model for planning problems where eeects of actions are nondeterministic and the state of the world is not completely observable. It is diicult to solve POMDPs exactly. This paper proposes a new approximation scheme. The basic idea is to transform a POMDP into another one where additional information is provided by an oracle....
متن کاملGenerating Safe Assumption-Based Plans for Partially Observable, Nondeterministic Domains
Reactive planning using assumptions is a well-known approach to tackle complex planning problems for nondeterministic, partially observable domains. However, assumptions may be wrong; this may cause an assumption-based plan to fail. In general, it is not possible to decide at runtime whether an assumption has failed and is putting at danger the success of the plan; thus, plan execution has to b...
